The Lumini

In September 2025, MarketPlace Arts brought the Lumini to Memorial Gardens for four days of extraordinary light, colour and joy!

The inflatable Lumini sculpture, created by internationally renowned Architects of Air, offered intricate egg shaped domes which created an inspiring space of light and colour. With a bespoke design for Newmarket, visitors were invited to step inside and be immersed in radiant colour, awakening all the senses.

The Lumini created a stimulating environment that was also calming and comforting, making it the perfect space to support mental health, emotional wellbeing, and social connection. Over 1000 people entered the Lumini and experienced this FREE magical, dreamlike world of domes and radiant light.

There were over 23 hours of free workshops by local artists and community groups in and around the Lumini, including:

Outside the Lumini, Memorial Gardens was buzzing with free activities across all 4 days. Visitors who were just stumbling upon the event were invited to try out:

  • Zine Making at the co-created Illustration Station by Yve Ward, a local illustrator.
  • Cloud Painting, responding to the collection at The National Horse Racing Museum. This partnership enabled us to offer free tickets to the museum to those taking part in the activity, resulting in £500 of free tickets being gifted to local people – many of whom had never been to the museum before.
  • Birdwatching with binos from the RSPB that were free to use at any point
  • Meditation, grabbing a seat in a deck chair and listening to a guided meditation written specifically for the gardens by Janine Tandy. You can listen to this below:
  • A rag bunting station where people could add to the colourful textile take over made by the Knit and Natter group through adding rags to bunting across the park
  • A Wellbeing Walk co-created with Newmarket Community Nature Reserve to explore the re-wilded green spaces of the town – see the route here.

Those who came will remember the amazing yarn bombing on view across the park, which was created by members of Newmarket Library Knit and Natter group.

This event was shaped by a community panel of local residents who co-designed the programme to reflect local interests and needs. We would like to thank Alan, Meera, Nicole, Janet, Mark, and Jill for their time and support.

The Lumini was generously supported by Newmarket Town Council.

Future Roots Wisbech

The project is currently in the research and development stage where our fantastic young volunteers are deciding on what kind of project to do. We talked about the issues and challenges these young people are facing and ways we could make a small change in Wisbech to impact the community positively. There was a general consensus of making an improvement that would benefit the young people in the area. They also decided to open out the decision making process to a wider audience so if you’re aged between 12 and 25 and want to contribute your ideas let us know which project you’d like to see happen!

Options proposed are:

  • Environmental improvements – creating a community garden and/or big piece of public art – this could include graffiti workshops so the participants can contribute to the final piece.
  • Creating a covered structure on Lime Avenue for the community to gather in together – with possible creative activities taking place

Fill out the form below to submit your vote and we’ll be in touch with how you can join in or see the completed project later this summer.

Select one of the above choices to have your say on what we create together

Future Roots offers:

  • A chance to support real change in your community
  • Flexible sessions to fit around study/work/social commitments
  • Transferable skills that will look great on your cv and boost your employability

Legends of Lime Avenue

The event was the result of a long standing collaboration with residents in Wisbech and Orchards Church of England Academy.

Funding provided by Clarion Futures, the charitable foundation of Clarion Housing Group, supported festivities that included a puppet theatre exhibition, music, fireside storytelling, and food. The evening concluded with a shadow puppet performance that brought local legends to life.

The family-friendly gathering provided an opportunity for community members to connect and celebrate stories from Lime Avenue and its residents. The event featured work created by Orchards C of E Academy students and Waterlees residents.

Acclaimed playwright Dan Allum collaborated with community members to develop an original script that incorporated local stories and legends centered around Lime Avenue. Artist Liz Falconbridge led shadow puppet workshops at a local school, creating visuals for the event’s finale.

Attendees expressed positive reactions to the event, with comments highlighting community togetherness and neighbourhood pride.

‘Today has been fantastic to see communities come together.’
‘I felt very happy that this is on my street.’

With continued support from Clarion Futures, work will continue with the community throughout 2025 on an intergenerational project developed by young people.

Centre Stage

Project Overview

Centre Stage puts the people of Wisbech in the spotlight, celebrating the diversity of the people that call this historic town their home. The project draws inspiration from a remarkable unfinished painting in the Wisbech and Fenland Museum’s collection. This project is a powerful narrative of Wisbech’s living history, bridging past and present by celebrating the community’s rich diversity and ongoing story.

Historical Inspiration

The project is rooted in an unfinished painting by Alfred Balding, depicting Wisbech Market Place during the celebrations for Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887. This artwork features many of the town’s residents within a still-recognisable market place backdrop, with many locals having paid for the privilege of being featured.

Contemporary Vision

CentreStage aims to capture a contemporary snapshot of Wisbech through photographic portraits representing the diverse communities that make up the town. These portraits will be housed within a unique, theatre set-inspired model that reimagines the market place for the 21st century.

Community Collaboration

The project will be created through a collaborative effort involving the community of Wisbech, lead artists Electric Egg, and a professional set designer.

Exhibition Details

The final interactive installation will be shared and displayed at the Wisbech & Fenland Museum following its launch on 25 February 2026, featuring the new portraits alongside the original 1887 painting.

Light Up The Town 2025

A Spring Celebration – How We Lit Up the Town Together

Light Up The Town brought communities together across Fenland and West Suffolk, transforming local towns with stunning light projection art during early 2025. Collaborating with SDNA Moving Image and community groups, the project illuminated historic buildings with artworks made by local residents, bringing people together during the transition from winter to spring.

We saw over 1,500 of you visit the light shows that lit up buildings in Chatteris, March, Wisbech, Whittlesey, Brandon, Mildenhall, and Newmarket in early 2025.

West Suffolk Light Shows

The West Suffolk leg of the project featured three captivating evenings:

  • Brandon came alive on Tuesday, 25th February at the Town Council’s Old School House on Market Hill
  • Mildenhall was beautifully illuminated on Wednesday, 26th February at St. Mary’s Church
  • Newmarket concluded the West Suffolk shows on Thursday, 27th February at St. Mary’s Church

Fenland Light Celebrations

The Fenland towns followed with their own spectacular light displays:

  • Wisbech kicked off on Monday, 3rd March at Museum Square
  • March hosted its event on Wednesday, 5th March at the Town Hall
  • Chatteris shone brightly on Thursday, 6th March at the Church of St Peter & St Paul
  • Whittlesey concluded the series on Friday, 7th March at Saint Mary’s Church

How was the artwork made?

The artwork was developed in 4 stages: collecting images from local gardening groups, workshops with community groups collaging these images, SDNA animating the artworks with projection mapping software and presentation of the artworks projected onto local landmarks at the Light Shows. The artworks celebrated the work of the gardeners, the creativity of the workshop participants and the transition from winter to spring.

We would like to thank community groups: Brandon Circle, Mildenhall Teen Chill, Newmarket Art Group, Wisbech Recovery Cafe, Cromwell and Neale Wade Academies and Whittlesey brownies and girl guides for creating the artworks for their towns.

Gardening groups Brandon in Bloom, Brandon Town Keepers, Mildenhall in Bloom, Newmarket Community Nature Reserve and Fenland In Bloom kindly supplied images of their hard work for the workshops.

How was the community involved?

  • Decision Making: Community voices shaped the project from the start. MarketPlace Arts ran two community panels to select the artists SDNA for this project. The community panelists represented each of the seven towns involved in the decision making process for this project.
  • Collaboration: MarketPlace Arts worked with SDNA to run creative workshops with community groups in every town. We worked with local gardening groups to source images and plant names which served as inspiration and material for collages created by local community groups in the workshops.
  • Artwork Creation: SDNA used the artworks made by community members, animating them and projecting them onto local buildings for the Light Shows.
  • Local Support: Local venues hosted the events and provided refreshments, helping to create a warm, welcoming space for neighbours to gather and celebrate together.
  • Volunteering: Our Light Shows couldn’t happen without the support of local volunteers! Want to get involved? We’re always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help bring future events to life – get in touch and be part of something special in your town.

We would like to thank the community spaces kindly hosting the light shows: Brandon Town Council, St Mary’s Church Mildenhall, St Mary’s Church Newmarket, Wisbech & Fenland Museum, March Town Hall, St Mary’s Church Whittlesey and Church of St Peter & St Paul, Chatteris.

Who are SDNA?

SDNA is a creative studio founded in 2010 by Valentina Floris and Ben Foot. They specialise in producing distinctive digital artworks and interactive experiences for a range of settings, involving people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds in the creative process. They animate galleries and public spaces with bold and imaginative displays to engage and inspire new and diverse audiences in fresh and exciting ways.

You can visit their website here.

Why did MarketPlace Arts commission SDNA?

MarketPlace Arts is part of the Creative People and Places programme, funded by Arts Council England and the National Lottery. We support communities in creating cultural activity where they live, producing festivals, installations, workshops, theatre, and more throughout the year.

Every project is co-created with local communities to ensure it’s meaningful and relevant. For this project, we ran two community panels made up of representatives from all seven towns to select the lead artist.

Mildenhall Art Trail

The trail featured 50 works of art, created by Mildenhall residents during Art Road Trip; a MarketPlace project in partnership with The National Gallery and Mildenhall Museum celebrating the 90th anniversary of The Great Air Race from Mildenhall to Melbourne in 1934.

There were artworks created by the local community in five different locations around Mildenhall such as collage, painting and Van Gogh inspired pieces.

Community launch – the community launch event was held where goodies were handed out to walkers who completed the trail. MarketPlace met with members of the Mildenhall community and local residents to share ideas about future creative projects.

Visitors were able to take a closer look at the buildings and locations, immerse themselves in art, and uncover fascinating facts about The Great Air Race along the way.

We’ve really enjoyed the trail and the kids have really enjoyed it as well. It’s been nice to have the map to see where we need to go. The artwork has been lovely to look at and the historical pieces of information along the way have been really good to learn about.”

MarketPlace expressed gratitude to Mildenhall Museum, the National Gallery, and all of the brilliant artists who created the artwork that was discovered during the trail.

I was excited to find that it was happening on our doorstep”

The Art Road Trip and Trail are so important to the community of Mildenhall as it brought the community together to either experience something new or build on an existing interest in art. The artwork from the trail is still displayed at Mildenhall Hub and it is lovely to see visitors stopping to have a look and discuss the art.” – Michelle Slater, Assistant Facilities Manager at The Hub, Mildenhall

FenCreators

Create, connect, calm: mindfulness and friendship through art

15 weeks of free, inspiring workshops in your Fenland community. From sewing to filmmaking, there’s a range of activities for all skill levels, guided by professional artists. Enjoy a welcoming, sociable atmosphere that fosters new friendships and community connections. Come as you are, work at your own rhythm, and let your creativity flourish in a safe and supportive space.

The workshops are open to individuals aged 18 and above and cater to all skill levels, from complete beginners to enthusiasts. Regular participants will have the opportunity to shape the programme, exhibit their work locally, and help run creative activities at local events.

The project has blossomed from the successful pilot of quilting workshops in Chatteris which we introduced, following requests from the local community. This is a Creative Lives Know Your Neighbourhood Project funded by UK Government and Arts Council England.

Sessions run from September to December 2024.

We’d love people to attend as many sessions as possible, but workshops will also work as standalone sessions, so don’t worry if you can’t make them all or if you’re only interested in particular sessions.

Wisbech Rose Fair

We returned to Rose Fair, with lots of creativity and fun for everyone to get involved with in and around the town centre.

We reunited with the brilliant Mandinga Arts who took part in the parade and performed their brand new show ‘Pansy Postal Service’ at in the church gardens, complete with human flowers. Their bright and imaginative costumes were the perfect addition to the parade.

Artist Karin Forman held drop-in creative sessions in the sensory garden where people could make their own intricate paper flowers to take home.

Plus, we unveiled our street art sculpture which was installed in Horse Fair shopping centre, designed and spray-painted by the local community in our public workshops with Artist and Illustrator Nick Shove.
